Book ‘Regional and National Elections in Western Europe.
Territoriality of the Vote in Thirteen Countries’ Together with Regis Dandoy I am editing a book on regional and national elections in Western Europe. The book challenges the dominance of the second-order election model which is often used to analyze regional elections. The second-order election model assumes that regional elections are subordinate to first-order national elections which implies that regional election results are (highly) dependent on politics in the first-order arena. The main contribution of the book is to explore the conditions under which regional elections obtain or loose second-order election characteristics. The research strategy consists of presenting in depth country studies which adopt a common framework with regard to the central research questions and the dependent variables. The aim is to come up with possible ‘bottom-up’ variables (inductive approach) which may explain regional election results alongside or instead of the traditional ‘top-down’ (deductive) approach of the second-order election model. More in detail, the project concerns the analysis of regional election results in thirteen West European countries for the period 1945 until 2011. We have asked thirteen country experts to reflect upon regional voting patterns for national and regional elections in their respective countries. The book will be published in the Comparative Territorial Politics series by Palgrave Macmillan in 2012 or in 2013. Below you will find a table which details the countries covered and the authors of the country chapters. Each country chapter will be accompanied by a country data file which provides pre-formatted data on the five central dependent variables of the book: congruence of the vote, government congruence, turnout, party vote share swings, and regionalist parties. The country data files will provide an indispensable source for scholars and practitioners who would like to get additional and specific information for particular regions or parties. The data files are especially designed for qualitative oriented scholars, students and practitioners who are not used to work with raw and large data files but who have some basic skills with Microsoft Office software. To give an impression how the book and the country excel files will look like you can download the chapter and excel file on the Netherlands. Dandoy, Regis and Schakel, Arjan H.
