Regionalist Parties
The data on regionalist parties comprise electoral strength for regionalist parties in national and regional elections and scores on regionalist party ideology for the period 1945-2010. This data has been collected together with Emanuele Massetti and we have created two datasets: a core and an extended dataset on regionalist parties. The main difference between the two datasets is that we could establish the ideology on the self-rule dimension (i.e. does the party claim for decentralization?) of 77 regionalist parties whereas we could not for the 157 other regionalist parties. We suspect these 157 parties to be regionalist because they obtain all their vote share in one particular region and/or their party name suggests that they strive for some kind of decentralization. Although the number of parties seem to differ greatly between the two datasets, if we express the difference in total amount of variation in vote shares we observe that they constitute less than 10% of the total variation in vote shares for national and 16% for regional elections. This means that most, if not all, of these 157 parties in the extended dataset are very small. We use the two datasets to investigate three questions: (1) how does decentralization affect the electoral strength of regionalist parties?; (2) what factors determine the ideological stance taken up by regionalist parties?; and (3) how does decentralization and party competition affect overall electoral strength of regionalist parties? The datasets will become available when the papers will be published. If you are interested in the publications where I use this data please consult the regionalist parties publication page.
