Teaching
In general, my teaching philosophy is that academic learning involves not only acquiring knowledge on a particular topic but should also involve critical assessment of theory and the development of academic skills of doing research. Most, if not all, courses should involve all three aspects and the aim of the teacher should be to teach students how to think and work in an academic or systematic way. In my experience the best way to achieve this goal is to allow students to work on a topic of their interest which ensures that they are eager to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills because they want to provide an answer to their research question. Especially with regard to teaching statistics, I have experienced that one-way communication almost never works effectively. A good way to integrate knowledge and skills is to let individuals or small groups work on a concrete research problem with regular consultation by the teacher. Most of the time I am involved in teaching methodology. I have taught courses on research design, qualitative and quantitative methods, and academic writing. In addition, I have supervised several Master- and Bachelor-theses. Below you will find the courses I have taught over the course of the years. Maastricht University
